Estonian Internet Foundation’s re-delegation application approved
The ICANN Board of Directors (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) approved the Estonian Internet Foundation’s re-delegation application to become the sponsoring organisation of the .ee domain name. The Estonian Internet Foundation has been fulfilling the duties of administration of the .ee top domain since 2010.
"The status of a sponsoring organisation will give the Foundation, and through that also the Estonian Internet community, the opportunity to have their say in issues related to domains and to the Internet in general. The newly acquired status lets us become a member of the Country Code Names Supporting Organisation acting under ICANN," says Heiki Sibul, member of the management board of the Estonian Internet Foundation.
The re-delegation process took almost two years. "I would like to thank the founders of the Foundation - the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and the Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications as well as the former .ee representatives Endel and Jaak Lippmaa, all the members of the supervisory board and those who supported us," Sibul added.

How Estonia Tamed Domain Dropcatchers: The Story of Domain Auctions
In 2016, the .ee national domain faced a long-standing problem: the unfair technical advantage of so-called domain catchers. The solution? Implement a transparent auction system that would create a level playing field for all interested parties. It wasn’t inspired by anything else but was a purely internal initiative – with the goal of fairness, not profit. The .cz registry did an interview with our Head of Development, Timo Võhmar, and discussed our domain auction system and experiences.
